Mikveh

Hadar Garlon: Mikveh

Mikveh - a ritual bath room, in which the faithful Jewish women get regularly purified  - becomes a place of collision of different approaches to faith and life in the play of contemporary Israeli playwriter Hadar Galron. At this sacred place one can witness how fate of the local women is being gradually revealed, together with their secrets and dramas, which everyone knows but nobody wants  to talk about. Everything has changed with the arrival of a new helper Shira, who refuses to shut her eyes to human torment. In her effort to help she has to fight with the barrier of religious rules and human prejudice. First, the women defend themselves against taking a fresh look at their faith and to proposed solutions. Eventually, however, in the dramatic conclusion they resist to the together-tying rules of their community.  On the background of traditional Jewish ritual the play opens the theme of today women´s role in the society, of current Orthodox community´s relation to daily life, and also offers excellent acting opportunities to eight actresses through their psychologically rich characters and dramatic fates.
