Communism

Viliam Klimáček: Communism (late-normalization tragedy)

Like every year Alena celebrates her birthday only with her close family members – with her husband Michal and their son. After all, February in Petržalka suburbs is the foulest month of the year and the basic unit of a communist society is – a communist family. Garlic butter canapés and Limbašský sylvan wine are served … But on Thursday of 9 February 1984 the General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party – comrade Jurij Vladimirovič Andropov -died, and his funeral has been shown on TV all day long. One has to be quiet. The USSR and other communist countries all fell into a pompous sadness. For millions of obedient citizens “building a better tomorrow” this day is only a short stop in their lives. But for Alena, things start falling apart as of today and nothing is going to be the same anymore…
